Course Description

The purpose of this cosmetology course is to train the student in basic theory, manipulative skills, safety judgments, proper work habits, and people/life skills necessary to sit for the NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts and to have achieved competency allowing the student to obtain an entry level position in cosmetology or other related fields.

Course Objectives

    1. Project a positive attitude 
    2. perform services offered in a full service salon
    3. Utilize professional chemical products safely
    4. Perform the art of artificial nails, if applicable
    5. Analyze diseases and disorders of hair, skin, and nails
    6. Understand salon business & professional ethics
    7. Apply learned theory, technical information, and related matter to assure sound judgments, decisions, and procedures
    8. The Privilege of entering an industry that has no limits to the opportunities available to those who have the ambition and desire to achieve

    Instructional Methods

    The Cosmetology program consists of theory and practical lessons. The theory class is comprised of weekly lessons and the practical class on mannequin and live client services. The use of Audio Visual, Demonstrations, Participation in Classroom Sessions, Lectures, Guest Artist and Clinic Experiences are used throughout the course.

    NATURAL HAIR PROGRAM
    300 Hours

    I. To meet the approval of the board, a natural hair care styling training course shall consist of 300 hours of instruction in theory and practical performances as set forth of this rule as follows:
    1. Sanitation                                                  
    2. Bacteriology
    3. Disinfection
    4. First Aid
    5. Shampooing
    6. Draping
    7. Anatomy
    8. Disorders of the hair & scalp
    9. Client Consultation
    10. Styles & Techniques of natural hair styling including:
    • Twisting
    • Wrapping
    • Extending
    • Locking
    • Blow Dry & Thermal Iron
    • Business Management
    • Professional Ethics

    II. Performances shall be defined as the systemic completion of the steps for safe & effective Cosmetic Art. Services to a client shall include the following:

    Performance Requirements Performance:

    • Braids 10
    • Twists 10
    • Knots 5
    • Corn Rows 5
    • Hairlocking 10
    • Artificial Hair & Decorations 10
    • Blow Dry & Thermal Iron 10
    • Braid Removal 10
    Certification of performance completions shall be required on the graduation form and Board's application for the Board Examination.

    Sharing Performance completions shall not be allowed unless the live model service consists of 20 or more lengths of hair.

    Credit for a performance shall be given to only 1 student unless the performance meets the requirements set forth. 

    Sanitation

    A performance shall consist of 10 or more lengths of hair

    BARBER STYLING
    1528 Hours - 40.75 weeks

    Course Description

    Barber Stylists possess specialized skills and knowledge that are in constant demand. Not only will graduates be practicing an art, there are also unlimited opportunities for success. Barber Stylists can advance in this field by becoming Shop Owners, State Inspectors and Chairmen of the Board of Barber Examiners, Barber Styling Instructor, School owners or a Platform Artist.

    Course Objectives

      1. To train students in haircutting, hair styling, permanent waving, hair coloring and all phases of theory outlined further in this catalog
      2. To prepare students to be able to complete the course, take the final exams given by the institute's instructors and receive a diploma
      3. To prepare students to take the exam given by the State Board of Barber Examiners upon completion of school. Students must pass a written and practical exam to receive a registered Apprentice Barber License. After one (1) year and no more than three (3) years, students must take an exam to become a Registered Barber, which qualifies them to own and operate their own barbershop.
      4. To prepare students to enter the ranks of the local work force as an entry level productive, contributing individuals by translating their newly acquired knowledge into usable, working, and practical skills
      5. To prepare students to perform the duties and accept the responsibilities of the job for which they are trained in an efficient and professional manner
      6. To prepare students to earn a living in the business world

      Course Description

      the manicurist course is designed to equip the learner with the theory and practical abilities necessary to render basic nail services. Students learn how to administer massage, manicure, and pedicure as well as sculpt acrylic and gel nails.

      Course Objectives

        The program objective is to give the student the knowledge necessary to develop manipulative skills for entry into the manicurist profession and to help prepare graduates to qualify to sit for the North Carolina State Board of licensing examination.

        Course Description

        The Esthetics course introduces students to the structure of the skin and several preservative and corrective skin applications. Our students perform facial treatments, massage, and the application of topical ointments. The student learns how to manipulate the skin manually and electronically using all modalities of the trade

        Course Objectives

        1. To train students in Esthetics, such as skin care or facials, make up application, body waxing, wraps treatments and all phases of theory outlined further in this catalog
        2. To prepare students to be able to complete the course, take the final exams given by the institute's instructors and receive a diploma
        3. To prepare students to take the exam given by the State Board of Esthetics Examiners upon completion of school. Students must pass a written and practical exam after: with a passing grade of 75% in theory and 75% in practical skills
        4. A completion of 600 hours in a duly licensed school for Esthetics
        5. To prepare students to enter the ranks of the local work force as an entry level productive, contributing individuals by translating their newly acquired knowledge into usable, working, and practical skills
        6. to prepare students to perform the duties and accept the responsibilities of the job for which the are trained in an efficient and professional manner
